Hatha yoga. Shakti’s influences are many, but you’ll find our own unique style includes a strong emphasis on alignment, awareness, and breath. Classes move at a slower pace than power or vinyasa flow classes with the intent of moving from a place of connection.
No. Simply come to class. You can do as much as you want, when you want. Do come to class a bit early, particularly if it is your first class. If you are new, please mention it to the teacher and s/he will happily show you around and get you set up. Saturday morning is a popular class time and with other nearby businesses, parking can be at a premium. If coming to Saturday class, allow a little extra time.
Some of our students move between levels of classes while others remain loyal to one level. Some simply come when they can. The descriptions below may help you decide where to begin.

Level 1 is great for beginners and those newer to yoga. It is also a good class for those who simply want to learn more about proper alignment or who want to work on more accessible postures.

Level 1 & 2 is more demanding. It is a great class for those who have an understanding of basic yoga poses and are comfortable attempting more challenging poses. This class is intended to take you beyond the basics where you can refine and wisely advance your practice.

Gentle yoga is a good fit for those who want a slow pace and low intensity.

The first time you come to class, you’ll need to pay at the studio. You can purchase a single class, a group of 5 or 10 classes, or pay monthly for unlimited classes. Your teacher will get you set up in our Mind-Body account, and from there you’ll be able to access your account online to see how many classes you have left and purchase more if you wish. Many students prefer to renew in person.
We have mats and props available for all students to use free of charge. Most students bring their own mat and use the community props (blocks, straps, and blankets).
We have a bathroom in which you can change clothes. We do not have a full locker room or showers.
Most of our classes are 60, 75 or 90 minutes. Don’t be intimidated by longer class times. All classes are paced appropriately for the class level and there is time for rest and relaxation at the end.

Wear clothing that is comfortable for movement. Avoid anything baggy and bulky as it makes it difficult for the instructor to help you with alignment. Women typically wear yoga pants, leggings or more fitted sweats. Tanks tops and fitted t-shirts work just fine. Men usually wear shorts and t-shirts. We go barefoot. We ask that no shoes are worn on the yoga floor. There is a place for them as you walk in the door.
Yourself and a mat if you have one. If you do not have one, we have some for you to use free of charge. We also supply any props such as blocks, straps and blankets that you may need. We typically stock high quality yoga mats at the studio should you like to purchase one.
Give yourself at least two hours between your last meal and the start of class to avoid discomfort.
You do not need experience to begin classes at Shakti, nor do you need to be particularly flexible or strong. A dedicated practice will help you cultivate a balance of strength and flexibility. And, we have many classes that are suitable to those brand new to yoga.
Inversions such as headstand, handstand and shoulder stand are taught in Level 1 and Level 1 & 2 classes, but they are in no way required. Whether it is fear or health concerns, your Shakti teachers will help you build the skills you need to work on poses safely and effectively. They are also prepared to offer alternatives and modifications when needed.

We hope to see you in class soon.
